Affirmations, both in its original form as A Center for Psychotherapy and Growth, and in its current reincarnation as Affirmations Psychological Services, has been a bright beacon for the Columbus LGBT Community since the 1980’s. It has also been a leader in providing services for persons living with HIV. It was one of the first agencies to open its doors widely for that population, even during the early, shattering years of the epidemic. And Affirmations has established a national reputation for working with clients recovering from trauma. It was my honor and privilege to be affiliated with Affirmations from 1993 until my retirement in 2017. As I worked with clients bravely facing their fears and moving through their recovery and healing, Affirmations was also a center for my growth, professionally and personally. That is due in large part to my colleagues at Affirmations, who were and are dedicated, highly trained, and talented therapists. I have no reservations recommending Affirmations for friends who are seeking therapy and growth.

Affirmations has been a unique counseling center for many years. I think it has become that due to the dedication and commitment of all of the therapists who have worked there over that time. Affirmations has been community minded and continues to be supportive of our diverse communities. When I think about the people who have entered our doors, I remember once being told that “many people in the LGBTQQ community have been helped by their therapy at Affirmations, but more so because of the ripple effect that has been felt throughput the whole LGBTQ family.“ As poignantly, other therapists have told me that they needed to decide whether to become a client of Affirmations or an associate/employee of Affirmations. The competent, knowledgeable, and ethical nature of our therapists has created an atmosphere that is respectful, welcoming, and safe. In fact, the dedication and commitment of all the therapists who have worked at Affirmations over the past 35 years have created this legacy and I look forward to seeing it continue for many years to come.

As one of the founders of Affirmations Psychological Services, I am thrilled to offer this testimonial to Dwight Tolliver, Ph.D. and the outstanding psychotherapists and support staff of Affirmations. I know that the psychotherapists at Affirmations have the necessary clinical skills and expertise to provide the added degree of challenge to help each client learn how to become an empowered person, ready and able to take the next right steps to further their recovery. Another important quality each staff member is committed to is a sound grounding in ethics, which is also necessary to ensure every client is treated with dignity, respect, and the protection they deserve as they choose to entrust their sacred and intimate journey with their therapist.
